One of the finest and most detailed collections of drawings by Vincent van Gogh is at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. This exquisite collection has almost 200 drawings and covers the years in which the artist worked at Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise. During these last years of his life Van Gogh arrived at his own individual style and made his most impressive drawings. A major source of inspiration at the time was Japanese graphic art and he made not only quick pen drawings but also worked in colour. As well as autonomous drawings he also produced sketches for paintings as well as copies of painted works.
The narrative descriptions in this book are the result of years of research and include detailed discussion about the art works, technical data and archive information concerning provenance, literature and exhibitions. The book's two introductions cover Van Gogh's stylistic development, the materials used, techniques and experiments.
More than 250 illustrations, including many historical photographs and paintings by Van Gogh, place the drawings in a fresh, valuable and colourful context.
This fourth part completes the existing catalogue series Van Gogh Tekeningen (Van Gogh Drawings) in association with the Van Gogh Museum.
